Flexible Spending Account & Health Savings Accounts

What is a Flexible Spending Account?

A Flexible Spending Account (FSA) allows you to pay for eligible health expenses with pre-tax dollars. The funds are deducted from your paycheck prior to your check being taxed and transferred into an account for your use. You can elect to enroll in an account for either healthcare costs or dependent care costs. This program is completely independent from all insurance coverages (i.e. you can sign up for flexible spending without having healthcare coverage.

How can I use my Flexible Spending Account?

A health flexible spending account allows you to determine what amount you want to contribute (tax-free) over the course of the year and you can access 100% of the funds immediately. Flexible Spending Account eligible expenses include, but are not limited to, doctor and hospital bills, prescriptions, dental expenses, and vision expenses. You can access your FSA funds through the issued debit card or by submitting a receipt for reimbursement to your personal bank account. A dependent care flexible spending account allows you to determine what amount you want to contribute (tax free) over the course of the year and you can only access the funds as you contribute them. Dependent care account eligible expenses include, but are not limited to, childcare costs, before and after school programs for dependents 13 and younger, as well as adults or other relatives that are incapable of caring for themselves. You can access your dependent care account funds by submitting a form for reimbursement.

What if I did not spend all of my FSA funds this year?

You will be able to carryover up to $640 into the 2025 plan year and up to $660 into the 2026 plan year. These carryover amounts can be used for expenses incurred in that next plan year that it is rolled into.

Can I submit claims to my Flexible Spending Account for my dependent children and/or spouse?

Yes. The account can be used for medical expenses for yourself, your spouse, or your children up to age 26.

What is a Health Savings Account?

Just like an FSA, a Health Savings Account (HSA) allows you save and pay for eligible healthcare expenses with pre-tax dollars. The funds are directed to a personal account and set up at the institution of your choosing. Unlike an FSA, you can only access money that you have contributed, and you must be covered under a federally qualified High Deductible Health Plan to enroll. An HSA does not have a rollover maximum.
